The Norman Family Fishing Holiday at Canal Farm - June 2009

Canal Farm fishing is not just about dipping in and catching hand fed Carp every cast. All my family worked hard to conquer the lovely healthy fish. We tried all types of baits to tempt the larger fish, it was only when we decided to fish really light bottom end tackle to catch the smaller Rudd, that we started catching the bigger fish.

It is challenging but enjoyable fishing. My three children Dene, Scott & Jenny loved the fishing nearly as much as they enjoyed the Chickens.

The Hares were running wild by the Pond and one of the lovely Barn Owl's came to join Scotty fishing at the lakeside, silently sitting on the deep water sign keeping his keen eyes on Scotty as he waited for the bite alarm to scream.

A short evening session on the pole saw Gary catch his first ever Barbel, plenty of Rudd including the fine fish. The only fish taking the corn were the lovely small Tench. The clear sky brought the Carp out to feed and he landed two lovely fin perfect Carp a 2.5lb common and a 6 1/4lb Mirror both caught on Red Maggot.

This lovely Mirror Carp was Gary's second best pole caught Carp at 6.5lb, fishing a single Red Maggot fished to drop quickly through the masses of smaller silver fish. It took 25 minutes to land on the lighter gear but was well worth the effort.

The Canal is filled with fish but we will rake a swim out next year and hopefully we will land one of the GIANT specimen Chubb spotted less than a foot from the edge, it is an exciting challenge for my next visit. My advice is do not ignore the quality of fish in the disused Canal I have landed some nice Roach this year but I have seen the monster fish that lurk in its depths.
